I have studied the art of wood engraving for many years now, being drawn first to the fine detail that can be achieved. Wood engraving differs from wood block printing in that the engraving is made on the end grain of a very hard wood. The design has been carved by hand using very sharp, old fashioned tools called spitstickers, scorpers and gravers. This method of printing dates back centuries to Thomas Bewick. When the design was carved I proofed it and then enlisted Graham Moss, master printmaker at The Incline Press to make an edition of 50 prints. Each print is signed and numbered, the number on the image shown here may differ from the print available. Unlike a digital print, a wood engraving is classed as an original work of art.
