My ceramics are the result of a long period of experimentation with black stoneware clay. My aim is to create pieces that reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, and to form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.
I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then decorate the surfaces with coloured slip (liquid clay) which I apply with a natural sponge. The motifs are my own creation and are influenced by textile designs and artwork from the early 20th century.
While there are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours. Pieces bear my maker’s mark of a swallow impressed into the base.

Handmade in black stoneware ceramic, I’ve created a spherical jar vase or moon jar as the latest addition to my Ribbons Collection featuring swirling ribbon style decoration in yellow ochre and white. The shape has a retro antique look to it, reminiscent of Korean Moon Jars, while the decoration echoes the spherical form, but is quite contemporary to fit in with today’s interior design styles. The outside is the natural finish of the grainy black stoneware clay, and I glazed the inside with an iron lustre glaze so that it can hold water for flowers or foliage. 16cm high x 7 cms across the opening. The bottom bears my potters’ mark of a swallow in flight, which I impress into the clay with my personal stamp before firing.
