Warm Italian sunshine is the inspiration for this scarf. I was designing a textile gift for a dear friend, based in Italy, who loves to wear accents of red, oranges and dark yellows. This made me consider how any scarf woven for warmer climes should be constructed from a light, open fabric, and woven that would be soft potentially for direct contact with skin. I hand-spun the weft from a variety of silks, baby camel and soft wool to give subtle variations in colour and texture.

Ideal for wrapping round either summer shoulders or cold winter necks, this lightweight scarf, with its soft drape, features hand-spun and hand-woven materials. My hand-spun yarn mixes silk, baby camel and soft wool in a variety of deep golden yellows. I've woven it by hand in plain weave onto a warp of throwster's silk (mulberry silk recycled from the silk industry). Much of the width of the scarf echoes the deep gold colours of the hand-spun weft, with the remainder woven onto a bright orange warp. The scarf is just over 1.5m in length (excluding the tassels) and 18cm wide. Hand-wash carefully at low temperature and lie flat to air dry.
