I love collecting things discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. My favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. Bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes. Found by chance.

Pendant

September 2024

I visited Staithes Beach in North Yorkshire on a lovely day in late August 2024. The tide had already reached the point where some of the beach was cut off but there’s a lovely small sandy area which in still accessible within the harbour walls. Staithes is a working harbour surrounded by beautiful houses, a wonderful place.

Although there wasn’t a large area to mudlark I found a few small pieces of ceramic, one in particular with tiny, blue streaks. The glaze had completely washed away, I love the matte finish that comes from time spent in the waves so hoped to make a pendant.

I never have a set idea of how the finished piece will look but instead allow it to naturally develop. I thought the original shape would remain however, through cleaning and sanding the form changed into a droplet. I managed to drill a hole and smooth, finish with matte Eco friendly sealant.

The idea is to create something new from old, found by chance. The finished piece isn’t meant to be perfect or highly polished. Instead retain part of the shard’s original character, including marks and stains. Full of history and journey, a small piece of ceramic starts again as a one of a kind pendant.

Hanging on 46 cm 925 sterling silver snake chain.

Pendant Measures 23 mm x 13 mm (widest) x 5 mm.

Delivered in gift box, gift bag made with recycled materials, includes a short bio.
