May Day in Cornwall has many traditions, each town and village with their own celebrations, and Padstow has it's iconic Obby Osses, dancing at speed and rotations all day throughout the coming and going of May 1st. Thought to be an ancient celebration of fertility in the manner of Beltane rites. In response to a more Methodist sensibility, the Blue "Peace" Oss came into being. The Blue Oss has a teaser and procession of supporters as well as a rival in the form of the Old Red Oss, who has their own teaser and supporters. Each process through the town and "die" in the evening to be born anew new May Day.
