Inspiration
I have previously painted a larger than life bumble bee. It has a very dramatic look and I wanted to replicate this with another insect. I also wanted to try out some new beautiful coloured pencils I had just acquired. I didn't want to just go for the obvious choice of perhaps a butterfly. Those of you who follow my work will know by now that I sometimes like to choose those creatures that sometimes get overlooked by other artists. I decided to have a go at an Emperor Moth as they are so striking. It was a great challenge to complete this drawing especially to capture natures most wonderful symmetry and the moths velvety texture.
I used anthracite grey pastel paper to emphasise the colours and give it a dramatic effect. I also added some splashes of siver ink to give it a magical 'night time' feel
