I am really interested in folklore and traditions, stories and superstitions. I had wanted to make a Mari Lwyd piece for some time but wasn't sure what medium to try at first. I think she looks beautiful in embroidery. I love the texture the thread gives to an image. I hope you enjoy it too

Full description

Hand embroidered image of Mari Lwyd designed and completed by me.

Made with 100% cotton thread onto 100% cotton fabric with bead detail and tiny working bells.

The frame is a dark forest green to compliment the image and the time of year the Mari Lwyd is seen.

The Mari Lwyd or 'grey mare' is a hobby horse made of a horse's skull and decorated with ribbons, bells and cloth. The Mari, sometimes along with other characters such as Jesters would travel from house to house during the festive season, asking for entry with song. If allowed to enter and perform, the Mari Lwyd is said to being good luck for the New Year. This is an old Welsh folk tradition with an interesting history.

The frame is approx. 9 inches high by 6.5 inches across. It has a hole at the back so it can be hung on a wall.
