This piece shows “the last tree” about to be engulfed by flames, the burnt remains of tree trunks, and the smoke from the deliberate forest fires, surrounding it. This piece took many hours to create, from collating images of forest fires, designing the layout, drawing the cartoon, and weaving it, then stitching it to the felt covered mdf board. It was inspired by my preoccupation with the plight of our rapidly disappearing rainforests.
It was part of a touring exhibition with Tapestry Touring International.

Full description
The Last Tree Standing is a one of a kind, mounted tapestry weaving which has been handwoven with a mixture of wools, cotton and rayon yarns including some of my hand spun and hand-dyed wool using lichen. It is woven in various shades of green, blue, grey, orange, yellow and red. I have used an eccentric weave technique to create the effect of the movement of the flames and I have used a soumak weave to create the tree trunks. I have used a random weave pattern to create the tree foliage and it was woven sideways on my Spinspired loom (see photo) It is stitched onto a piece of felt covered mdf which measures 24 x 20 x 2cm and hangs from d rings with twine.
It will be well wrapped in tissue, bubble wrap, boxed and posted by Special Delivery with Royal Mail. Where possible I reuse packaging to reduce cost to the customer and to the environment.
