May Day in Cornwall has many traditions, each town and village with their own celebrations, and Padstow has it's iconic Obby Osses, the old oss being Red, and dancing at speed and rotations all day throughout the coming and going of May 1st. Thought to be an ancient celebration of fertility in the manner of Beltane rites. The Old Red Oss has a teaser and procession of supporters as well as a rival in the form of the newer Methodist Blue Oss, who has their own teaser and supporters. Each process through the town and "die" in the evening to be born anew new May Day.
