I almost always have my camera with me when I go walking, because I'm always on the look out for reference material. On this day, the evening light and the slight haze around the abbey created the most gorgeous composition and I snapped it just for me really. As tends to happen, it got filed away until I decided to do a series of mini drawings that reflected my time living in Whitby. The strong silhouette of the ruins and deep shadows made this one an ideal choice for a small work and it turned out to be my favourite of the lot. I paired it with a snowscape to balance the seasons and turned them into limited edition prints.

Full description
A lovely little study of Whitby abbey as the sun went down one solstice evening. Taken from my original charcoal pencil drawing.
I moved from Whitby to Newcastle recently and decided to do a final series of landscapes honouring my old home town. I chose two drawings to create a very limited run of 50 prints of each, all hand signed and numbered. Each print is securely bagged up with a 6" (approx 15cm) white mount and backing board.
