The inspiration for this vessel was part of a project to depict the coronation with the theme of Crown. I was inspired by the idea that the monarchy is diminishing in importance. The was part of greating a bastion with multiple thrown parts. This was thrown with a coarse raku clay rather than the smooth stoneware. I am very pleased with the effects. The inspiration came after watching YouTube videos about various English Craft Potters and has inspired me to move beyond the control of standard shapes to bring life to pots and vessels.

Full description

This is a medium sized Raku vase which I love for the richness and depth of colour mixed with the smokiness of its creation. The clay body has a rough texture and is glazed with a copper based glaze which contrasts with the turquoise colour and has brought golden hues too. I have used wax resist an dipping techniques to leave raw fired clay which have been smoked black adding contrast. There are irregular thrown ridges on the sides which give the vessel movement and life. The glaze has crazed nicely over the rim. This is not suitable for food.

It is made from a coarse clay, and although it is food safe, it is unlikely to hold liquids.

It is hand made and thrown on a wheel, bisque fired to 900oC then glazed and raku fired.

Raku originated as a Japanese pottery technique and involves quickly heating the pots to red heat and then cooling it quickly in different ways, giving crazing and unpredictable results with the glaze colour.

I love making Raku items. The process is so dynamic and unpredictable and when the magic happens the results can be superb.

The vessel is 14.5cm tall and 7.5cm diameter
