Larvikite is named after the town of Larvik in southern Norway, and is also known as "black moonstone" or "blue pearl granite".
The colour varies from light grey to very dark grey, with flashes of blue iridescence from the presence of feldspar crystals.
It is the national stone of Norway.
Moonstone is a semi-translucent form of Feldspar, usually white or grey.
Moonstone’s unearthly glow is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar.
It was once believed that this glow came from the light of the moon trapped in the stone.

At first glance this necklace looks quite understated with its monochrome appearance, but a second look reveals the flashes of blue and silver from the Swarovski crystals, the Larvikite and the Moonstone as the piece catches the light.
As a centrepiece, I have made a pendant from a 14x10mm faceted black Onyx teardrop topped with 4mm Onyx beads, 4mm Swarovski 'light sapphire' crystals and a Moonstone disc.
This pendant is set between an Onyx and a silver hematite bead, then flanked with 5x8mm Larvikite rondelles.
The main body of the necklace is made from trios of moonstone nuggets, 6mm black Onyx and 6mm Larvikite beads with a Swarovski crystal in the colour 'light sapphire' on each side for extra sparkle.
The Moonstone nuggets are semi-translucent, with other-worldly flashes of luminous blue in their depths, and the Larvikite beads are a mottled grey with subtle glints of silver and blue in the light.
The necklace then graduates to smaller 4mm beads of Howlite, Larvikite and Onyx.
Silver hematite beads highlight and separate the semi-precious beads, and add to the shine.
The necklace is fastened with a Tibetan rose toggle clasp in a silver finish.
The clasp is nickel and lead free.
This necklace measures approximately 17 inches (43cm).
Your necklace will be carefully wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
Price includes delivery within the UK.
