limp vellum bindings are an important historical binding style that is currently being rediscovered and finally gets the attention it deserves. Stitching together parchment is a technique that was used frequently because materials (parchment) used to be more expensive than labour. And is hardly ever done nowadays because now it is the other way around. But I think it adds a very special flavour to the book.

Full description

The cover for this unique book is made from stitched together pieces of parchment and vellum. On the inside covers you see patterned paper which is hand decorated paste paper.

This is how the book is made:

First, I hand weaved tapes from linen thread.

Then the paper is torn to size and folded, and then sewn onto these tapes.

Next, hand stitched headbands are added using the same tape. On industrial bindings these are just decorative, but for this structure the endbands are functional and contribute to the coherence of the book.

Then the cover has been stitched together from different parchment pieces, cut and folded to size and was then fitted around the text block. In a last step, the tapes from the sewing and the headbands are laced through the parchment to connect the cover and text block. I then added a few additional stitches with the same silk band to secure everything firmly in place, making this a purely non-adhesive binding.

The facts in short:

approx. 210 pages from a creme coloured sketching paper

12.5cm x 16cm (5" x 6.1/3"), page format, a favourite for compact journals
