I recently began working with a new KS2 pupil, doing maths, and realised that a place value slider would be very useful in our lessons. These simple pieces of equipment are readily available in primary schools, but not so easy to get hold of outside of them. The few that I managed to find online were very expensive, so I decided to make my own!

Full description

Smart, simple item with enormous learning value at KS2 level. Write a number on the laminated slider using a whiteboard pen so that different digits appear in the boxes (Ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths and hundredths). Ask the child what each number stands for - so for example a 5 in the thousands column means there are five thousands. Then use the slider to show what happens to a number if you times or divide it by 10 (or 100) - the numbers in the columns all move to the left or the right, therefore making it 10 or a 100 times larger (or smaller).
