I love collecting things that have been discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. My favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. Bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes.

Shards Hand crafted Jewellery and framed artworks using pre loved and discarded ceramics. Ceramic material will show signs of wear and damage. Entire process is a creative experience from discovery to final picture, nothing planned or preconceived. All materials personally collected from river banks, charity shops, roadside, woods, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or donated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each titled piece comes with bio of where the ceramic came from, known history, original information and when the artwork was created. Some ceramics collected are used as found, while others are cut randomly which will shape the final picture. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece.

Re-Created into Earrings December 2021
I visited Richmond in October, a lovely market town in North Yorkshire where I found a few interesting pieces of ceramic in the charity shops. Some were rescue plates from odds and ends boxes, cracked or badly damaged and others were stand out pieces, slightly damaged and perfect for a new project.
These drop earrings are made from a cracked side plate, a pretty pattern of flowers and dark blue, a lovely plate but very badly damaged, destined to be thrown away.
I gently clipped the ceramic with tile cutters to create random pieces. Two rounded shards formed from the edge of the plate, attractive in shape and pattern, perfect for earrings. Front glaze in tact, sides, back sanded and sealed, edges intentionally left uneven to keep in character of how the shards formed. Similar in shape, design and size but completely individual. Full of history.
The idea is to create something new from old. The finished item isn't meant to be perfect or highly polished but instead retain some of the original character, including scratches and chips.
Delivered in recycled packaging and includes gift box, gift bag and short bio.
