I made this series of boxes all from one piece of spalted beech. I spotted the board at Tyntesfield National Trust property, in the yard of the Somerset Bodgers.
I made the boxes to show the fascinating patterns formed in the wood. I designed the lids with their front edges keeping the natural shape of the sawn board.
All of the boxes a slightly different sizes, letting the patterns in the wood dictate the size of the components.

Wood is a natural product that continues to move. It moves with the seasons, and in modern times, moves with the central heating! When making things from wood, I try and allow for the movement when designing. But it doesn't always work....so if a small crack appears, it's just the wood doing it's thing.

Full description
This is box number one of a series of six boxes all made from one board of spalted beech.
The lid and sides of the box all show the characteristic black lines and patterns of the spalting in the beech.
The lid of the box has a natural front edge, formed from the waney edge of the original board.
The lid is hinged by 2 small antique effect hinges. When opened, the lid is supported by an antique brass chain attached between the lid and box side.
The inside sides and bottom of the box are lined with red coloured felt.
The outside bottom of the box is also covered with black felt.
The wood has been finished with an acrylic lacquer to give it protection, but not an overly glossy shine.
The box is 205 mm long, 95 mm wide and 50 mm high. The box lid is slightly wider than the box due to it's waney front edge.
This box displays the natural beauty and character of the wood, and would make a fabulous gift for Christmas, birthday or anniversary.
