This is a one-off pair of earrings designed to represent a pair of seahorses in an aquarium, as imagined in the music of Sant-Saens. I have hand carved the shape of the seahorses in sterling silver as a mirror image or reflection of each other (seahorses pair for life) then used repousse techniques to give them a three dimensional appearance. In addition, I have used granulation for the eyes, soldered the pectoral fins. All of the surface of the silver is covered in engraved detail to give the impression of the fish's distinctive bony plates and elaborate fins. The seahorses hang within dyed yellow agate quadrangles, as translucent as glass, the rich acid yellow colour echoing the colour of many living sea-horses. They are mounted on my own hand-crafted ear fixings. This type of agate possesses the quality that it rings like a bell when it is tapped gently. Each earring measures 60 mm or 1 1/4" in length with the agate rectangle measuring 34 mm 1 x 25 mm or 1 1/2" x 1". They weigh 7.9 g apiece and are stamped .925 for sterling silver on the reverse.
These lovely and fantastical earrings are carefully packaged in a decorated gift box, ready to give as a gift or keep for yourself, as you choose.
Seahorses are mysterious little fish about which very little was known for many years. The Etruscans and Romans believed them to be baby Hippocampi, the monsterous water-horses that pulled the god Neptune's sea chariot. They are still considered symbols of fidelity and good fortune in Venice to this day as they mate for life. Unusually, the male hatches the eggs from the female in his "brood pouch," effectively giving birth to them when they are ready for independence. In the Victorian period people were at last able to capture them alive and study them in detail in the new salt-water aquariums of the period. These ornate subterranean buildings inspired the classical music of Sant-Saens, which in tern inspired me to make seahorse earrings. Through study, we now know that there are at least 46 species of seahorse and their relatives the sea dragons, that they have bony armour rather than scales, no teeth and a prehensile tail, making them unique amongst bony fish.
