This online shop will be closing on January 4th 2026. Polarstar Pottery is alive and well and will be continuing to sell through local events in the Herts / Beds area. A big thank you to my online Customers, and also thanks to Folksy for making it possible.
I started making this form of vase for a commission, and tried lots of different variations on the theme - varying the curves and proportions to see what worked. Its a shape that works well for a vase. The base makes it very stable and the sphere adds volume but also creates a narrow neck which will hold tall stems upright. This one has been hand-carved like a thistle.

A tall, stable, ceramic vase shaped like a thistle with hand-carved thistle leaf shapes around the base.
This vase has been hand-built from several thrown pieces to create an unusual form with a sphere between two cone shapes. The sphere and top section are blue and fade to a glossy transparent green. Metal oxides applied under the glaze creates a unique design and highlight the carved design. The overall shape creates a narrow neck making it ideal to hold tall stems in an upright position. Stoneware fired to 1235 degrees C for a robust and watertight item.
25cm high, 10cm wide at the base.
