When I was growing up my parents would play calypso records, and I was entranced by their stories of life on faraway tropical islands; one of my ambitions was to visit some of these Caribbean islands. A few years after we were married, my husband Chris and I had the chance to visit friends who were living and working in Trinidad; not surprisingly, we fell in love with the beaches, the wonderful colourful birds, and the gorgeous, verdant plants and blossoms. Flowers in the UK were much more boring then, and neither of us had ever seen a Bird of Paradise flower. We were entranced by these extraordinary blooms – and this is my celebration of them.

Full description
Two flamboyant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) flowers are the stars of this striking wall hanging; the plant gets its name because the blooms resemble the crests of exotic birds.
The panel is created in stained glass patchwork, with each patch of fabric set off by an outline of black bias binding, creating a classic Art Nouveau/Tiffany effect. The blooms have petals of orange, yellow and peachy-red, with a lick of purple in the centre of each flower, and I used two different figured satins for the green leaf and the flower-stems. For the border, I found a perfect fabric which picks up all the citrussy colours.
The whole panel is backed and bound in plain black; a hidden casing at the top back of the quilt will hold your own batten/hanging pole.
The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a large recyclable jiffy bag. Hanging pole and fixings are not included.
