Description

A knight in full armour rides out to protect everything dear to an Englishman’s heart!

Our Englishman’s castle appears in the background – complete with replacement windows and satellite dish – and his sports car is parked in front. He gets a bit weary of being told to watch his cholesterol, so he’s also dreaming of his right to a cooked breakfast, then a good beefy meal washed down with some real ale.

His cricket bat is held aloft, and he’s riding out to protect the Union Jack, the flag of St George, the pound sterling (none of this euro nonsense), and his right to go huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ if he wishes. Meanwhile his dog is dreaming of chasing a rabbit; the rabbit, in its turn, is dreaming of a nice juicy carrot. He’s an old romantic at heart, so is also picturing a tropical island retreat and a nice long-term relationship. He does still want the right to play computer games whenever he feels the urge – but the computer would rather be living the high life literally, as a space ship …

The entire quilt is hand-painted to create the appearance of an old-fashioned coloured woodcut, and is hand-quilted throughout, including the border. I’ve shaped it to look like a knight’s pennant; a hidden casing at the top back will hold your own batten/hanging pole.

The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a cardboard box (recycled when possible). Hanging pole and fixings are not included.

Size: 46 x 60in (117 x 153cm)

Inspiration

I made this quilt for a show where the theme was House and Home; I immediately thought of the phrase 'An Englishman's Home is His Castle.'

I wanted to do it in the style of a hand-coloured medieval woodcut, and my original plan was to have a medieval knight riding out on his charger, with his lady, clad in wimple and long robe, waving him off from the turrets of the castle. Then it occurred to me that it would be a lot more fun if I depicted a MODERN Englishman, riding out to protect the things that are important to him!
