Kicking through autumn leaves never loses its pleasure; the variety of colours, tones and shapes is such fun. Recently I’ve been creating quite a few designs that use this technique of fusing and machine-quilting; sometimes I fussy-cut the motifs from print fabrics, and sometimes I cut my own shapes from plain and print fabrics. A beautiful garland of flower, leaf and barry motifs in amber autumnal colours, set off perfectly by a gold-and-cream print background.
I’ve used a technique called fussy-cutting, or broderie persé, to create this pretty circlet; the technique involves cutting motifs out of printed fabrics, then reassembling them into a new design.
I cut the motifs from batiks, so they have a random variety of tones and colours in shades of brown, orange, rust and ochre; the berries were cut from a shaded orange-red fabric. I bonded the shapes onto the background in a circle, and added a border in a tan print that gives the impression of cut hay.
Once the design was assembled, I quilted by machine across the whole design using long, langorous wavy lines cream polyester thread; the slight sheen on the thread complements the gold print background.
The quilt is backed in plain dark brown, and the edge is bound in a brown print with a tiny mid-brown speckle design, caught down with a decorative wavy machine stitch.
A hidden casing at the top back will hold your own batten/hanging pole.
The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a large recyclable jiffy bag. Hanging pole and fixings are not included.
