My shop will be closed from 15th December until 26th December 2024. Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing Christmas.
Due to updated UK government and EU regulations I am not able lo accept orders from Northern Ireland or to ship there. Apologies to those in that part of the UK.
Moon Jars have their roots in Korean ceramic tradition. Originally they were made in white porcelain, but today the term can be used to describe any pottery jars of loosely spherical shape made in any type of clay by throwing on the wheel or by other hand building techniques. I prefer hand building to throwing as I like the looser more informal effects of using the hands and the minimum of tools.

I use a combination of moulding and coil building black stoneware clay, where the form slowly grows as coils of soft clay are added and smoothed into shape. This moon jar is finished with areas of coloured liquid clay applied over the surface, and I then use a bamboo tool to score marks into these areas revealing the black clay beneath, before slowly drying the pot and firing twice, with a final firing to 1185 degrees C over 12 hours. The finish is matt as the clay is unglazed. Height is approx. 12 cms. Looks good as a focal point in minimalist interiors, or as part of a collection of modern ceramics, or to display grasses or twigs in ikebana style. I have also shown another Moon Jar from my collection in one of the images. Please use a mat on painted or polished surfaces as the clay is quite grainy!
