What we have here is your classic “image clash” – two random slides projected on top of each other to create an unexpected and surreal new picture that will enliven any wall. Allow me to explain.

My father was a Royal Navy officer from 1938-1956. After he died in November 2020, aged 98, I found boxes of slide photographs he'd taken since buying his first camera in 1950. Most of them date from his time serving in the Far East and Pacific with the Royal New Zealand Navy.

While looking through them I stumbled on a way of randomly combining multiple slides in the projector to create weird, witty and wonderful composite images. Suddenly a horse race is taking place in a harbour, or a a fishing boat finds itself in the middle of a street. I photographed and printed the result, and here we are.

10"x10" (250 mm x 250 mm) Archival Giclee Print

One of the Slide Double (SD) series created by me, Daniel Mudford.

Made by combining pairs of 1950s slides in an old projector, projecting them on a screen and photographing the result. The images have a lovely “what on earth is happening there?” quality and celebrate the limitations and possibilities of mid-20th Century technology. 100% analogue - no digital effects used whatsoever.

Printed on high quality, acid-free archival paper and printed using the Giclée method to last a lifetime.

(SD 12 is a montage of a women's fishing boat and a Singapore street c.1952)

Sold unframed, packaged in a 51mm wide tube.

Designed by Daniel Mudford in Chichester
