Despite being one of our larger native wild birds, our local Herons are good at not being seen.
I was once driving along a quiet lane and paused to admire a little lake. Taking in the scene through the car window, I suddenly realised I was being watched - by a Grey Heron, just like this one! Among the reeds and vegetation, it was only a few feet from the car, but I hadn't seen it initially because it was standing so still, statue-like. I don't know who was more startled! Me, I expect because it had seen me first and decided not to fly away but to pretend not to be there instead.
We stared at each other for a moment before I inched the car away, and marvelled at my close encounter. This, and my other Heron pictures are a little homage to that moment and to these graceful and intriguing birds.

Full description
A hand embroidered picture featuring a Grey Heron standing among some branches of weeping willow.
I used hand stitching and individual strands of embroidery threads to build up the form of the Heron in greys from white, silvery greys and slate grey to black. There's a bit of crimson and orangey tones for the long bill and the eye has its distinctive yellow ring. The leaves of the weeping willow are shades of green which tone neatly against the slightly darker background, setting off the Heron.
An elegant form, even if it's a bit fierce looking!
Framed in a neat wooden black frame with a grainy texture, the embroidery is approx 5x5 cms and the frame is just over 16x16 cms. I photographed it in natural light and without the glass for clarity, it is strung on the reverse and with the protective glass in place it is ready for display.
An ideal gift for a fan of Herons...
