Full description
I made these little ceramic birds at the start of the third lockdown. I felt I wanted to make a symbol of hope. Something to lift the spirits at this dark time.
Each little bird is made by hand from white clay and once fashioned it is dried out ready for biscuit firing. After cooking to 950 degrees the bird is painted with underglazes and coated with a clear shiny glaze. A second firing to 1220 degrees completes the process. As each bird is handmade and handpainted they are all slightly different.
The Rainbow Hope birds come packaged in a straw lined gift box with a copy of a verse from the Emily Dickinson poem ‘Hope is the thing with feathers’ which I have illustrated.
