This design is based on a huge banner (1800 x 3000 mm) I designed for the front of St John's Church in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield (see photo). That was many years ago - but I found I still have scraps of the satin fabrics in my stash and I thought it might be nice to use them to make smaller versions of the cross for church members to have at home. I've added some chain stitch embroidery to add texture and a simple wooden frame.
Frame measures 5.25 x 7.25 inches
This is the description I give when people ask what the original banner represents:
The theme of this banner is the old and new covenants between God and man.
The rainbow - the symbol of God’s original promise to Noah.
The cross - the symbol of Christ’s death to redeem mankind.
The shattered colours - the mystery of God’s plan.
The black appliqué - the suffering of Christ.
Surrounded in quilted water and flames - symbols of the Holy Spirit.
