My shop will be closed from 15th December until 26th December 2024. Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing Christmas.

Due to updated UK government and EU regulations I am not able lo accept orders from Northern Ireland or to ship there. Apologies to those in that part of the UK.

The Grafica Collection is the result of my love for an abstract painting called Nearing Circles by William Scott. The original painting hung in the office of Alastair Morton, the leading light of Edinburgh Weavers and he worked with the artist Scott to translate the design into a textile. I believe it formed part of an exhibition ‘Painting into Textiles’ in 1955. It’s typical of the Mid-Century Modern approach which is a real buzz in today’s interiors! So now the creative journey has gone from paintings to textiles to ceramics…

Full description

Lemon yellow, white and grey are the colour keynotes of this handmade black stoneware ceramic vessel/vase. Gloria looks good with yellow and white flowers, such as achillea, daffodils, mimosa, daisies or tulips. I created motifs featuring abstract discs, hemispheres and squares, with white, lemon and buff stripes on either side. On the other side I created a thinner white stripe with outlined circles in sgraffito work so you can choose which side to show off – hey presto a reversible vase! The colours are made from liquid clay, known as slip, which I apply with a natural sponge, masking off the areas I want to remain black, before firing the whole piece twice with a final firing to 1185 degrees Celsius. The interior is glazed while the outside is the matt black of the natural clay, contrasting with the pastel slip colours. Gloria is 18 cms tall, with a soft oval cross section 5cms x 6.5 cms approx. I made four similar pieces, each with different patterns and in different sizes, and I have shown a group in one of the images. I hope you agree that they make an eye-catching arrangement with or without flowers!
