Ever since I discovered a tattoo hiding on my Grandad’s calf under his trouser leg I have been fascinated with them. I couldn’t have been much older than four years, he was the most unlikely man to have had a tattoo.
When he was stationed in India waiting to go into Burma in the Second World War he got very drunk and had a dagger with a ribbon with Nellie (my Nan's name) tattooed upon his calf. It was proper old school... I loved it and would regularly sit by his feet and start pulling his trouser leg up to see it , much to his annoyance, but he would let me.
This has left me with a life long love of tattoo art even though I have none myself. I love the simplicity of the use of bold lines and colours in the old tattoos and how over time they change colour and bleed.
I really admire tattoo artists and how with the advancement of equipment and inks, they have taken the old school ideas to another level in recent years.
So again my Grandad is the root inspiration for this piece.

I have a romantic obsession with all things from the traditional Gypsy culture and just had to create a Gypsy woman for my tattoo collection.
As I have said in the inspiration box I have been fascinated with tattoos since I was a child, I use the style to create my own drawings to then turn into embroideries.
I hand stitched her using vintage DMC and Anchor threads on raw linen using various embroidery techniques.
I used a bold black backstitch to create her outline, like a tattoo.
Then have used chain and satin stitch to fill in her hair and headscarf.
This hand embroidered piece of textile art has been laced and stretched over acid free mount board in the traditional manner. Then framed in a beautiful gold vintage frame which has a burgundy cotton velvet boarder ... I couldn’t have found a more suitable frame if I’d tried. This piece of wall art is framed without glass as it distorts the stitches.
The frame measures 45cm x 39cm and is 2cm deep.
Without the frame this original piece of artwork measures 29cm x 23.5cm.
As the frame is true vintage it has a few scratches and scuffs.
I have tried to photograph the scuff on the velvet as best I can. I was going to replace it but decided against it as I think it adds to its appeal. It doesn’t show up that bad in reality but please be mindful if you purchase this piece.
As this piece of hand embroidered art is unique I will send Royal Mail Special Delivery which is included in the price.
