I created this linocut from a photo taken during a walk from Scalby across the cliffs to Scarborough. The view out towards Scarborough Castle was amazing, with the winding path and the grasses, ferns and hogweed bending in the breeze. It's a great walk which takes you along the cliffs and down in to Scalby, where you can take the miniature train through to Scarborough and visit Peasholme Park.
This print is created using two plates, each one hand carved and designed to overlap. The first plate is printed with a blend of yellow and green opaque inks on the land, and a specially mixed vibrant blue transparent ink to create the sky. After drying, the second plate is then printed in the same blue to create the sea and cliffs, and then hung to dry again. The transparent ink layered over the opaque creates a darker green which draws the eye down the cliffs to the shoreline.
