Transfer enamels are a mass production technique that was developed in the mid-eighteenth century to compete with the use of transfer decoration by the potteries. Put simply, it is cheaper to employ an artist to produce one picture which may then be used many times than to pay an artist to paint an individual picture on each item. A further spin off is that the one picture is the same though the whole production run; no risk of artistic flourishes. At my scale of work it is more by way of an interesting technique, It is the one technique that challenges my claim that each piece is unique.

I made this brooch by first building up several layers of white enamel on the copper oval then adding the transfer picture of a cat. The transfer is printed in pigments of finely ground enamel. Once it had been applied and was quite dry I fired it to the white background. It is not a picture stuck on, it is a part of the enamel work.
The oval measures 12mm by 18mm. It is mounted on 15mm brooch bar, soldered to the copper base. The brooch pin secures with a simple catch.
