This paper moth is based on the female Small Emperor Moth, or to give it it's latin name the Saturnia Pavonia. She is constructed entirely from paper, and mounted on vintage cotton with her typed latin name.
The wings are papercut from linen paper and dyed with paynes grey ink before being applied to tissue paper backing. Giving them a little more stability but still keeping their delicate beauty and slight transparency. These are then mounted upon the body of the moth which has been formed using paper mache techniques and dyed using the same ink as the wings tying the whole piece together.
The backing is a piece of vintage cotton fabric found hiding in a box of my great Grandmas sewing supplies. The latin name plate has been typed on a vintage manual typewriter to keep it authentic and in feeling with the rest of the piece..
The moth is then framed in the traditional style of entomology frames, a simple black box frame measuring approximately 20 cm square and 3.5cm deep.
I was inspired by the study of entomology and the display of insects in cases or frames.
