The design is printed on Acid Free 100% Bamboo A4 paper meaning the paper has a Cream/ Ivory tone.

For this print, I combined my interest in tradition illustration and 'folk style' illustration by creating a print design which was both influenced by the illustrations in old books and on tarot cards as well as the stylised floral designs of traditional european decorative folk art. After I finalised a design based on the depiction of a feminine moon in tarot, I transferred this to lino and carved the design. I printed this in a dark grey hue I mixed myself from Essdee Premium Block Printing Inks. As I consider the moon to be very calming I knew that I wanted to create a balanced and feminine pattern around the moon. After some experimentation with shape, direction and size I decided on created a circle of 8 Mahogany Roses, framing the moon and small border tulips in between each rose.

Please note that this print is unframed and due to the handmade process and characteristics of ink, natural differences and irregularities will occur between prints. Print will be hand signed by myself in pencil in bottom right hand corner.

Old / Traditional woodcut style of Illustration is a large influence in my work, alongside traditional european decorative folk art. Both of these came together to produce this print. I had been wanting to create a piece of art influenced by the designs on tarot cards as I find them beautiful and enchanting. I chose the moon card because I was fascinated by the personification of the moon. As the card is generally thought to symbolise Illusion/confusion I wanted to create a pattern and a sense of movement around the personified moon. To do this I went back to the studies I did of the decoration on an old Russian nesting doll (or Matryoshka doll) that I was given as a child. After some experimentation with layout I was happy with the symmetry and balance of my print that symbolises femininty as well as both balance and confusion.
