I made a drainer for myself to replace a plastic cutlery drainer that was past its best. After using it for a while I realised how much better a ceramic drainer was than plastic, it didn't tip over and it was so easy to keep clean (just wash it with the rest of the dishes or put it in the dishwasher). The big plus was of course no more plastic! The 4 small pegs it sits on means it sits into a draining board without wobbling.

A heather cutlery drainer made by pressing a piece of Dartmoor heather into the mug whist the white clay is leather hard. The drainer is then bisque fired with the heather in it, this burns away leaving the impression of the sprig behind. I rub copper carbonate into the impression to give the correct green of the stem and leaves, I then paint on the heather flowers. The drainer is then dipped in clear glaze and fired again. It measures 11.5cm diameter by 12cm tall.
