...& The Ivy 2 - Snowflake Christmas Card - Original HandPrinted Linocut Card

Love this

Beautifully complex Ivy formed into a snowflake, with delicate ivy-petal yellow flowers, rich purple seed heads & ivy green foliage.

I’ve built & cut two Lino blocks to create the image, which I’ve hand inked & hand printed using my old Adana Press.

I achieved three colours from two blocks in this image, by hand inking the petal & seed-head blocks with both it's colours. The foliage block is a less complicated & more usual one colour inking.

I then typeset the text on the back, using old metal letterpress which I hand ink & hand print also in Ivy Green, the 3rd impression - which I then fold to form a card.

It's very hard to convey, in a photograph, the truly beautiful physical quality of the ink & it's colour on this gorgeously soft-to-touch paper

In it’s pairing with holly as a festive icon, Ivy {amongst other things} represents the female ...& so Holly prevails. Ivy’s leaf, flowers, & berries are far more varied, complex & intriguing than holly's...

It’s a curiosity to me, now that ecology & planet-loving has become more obviously pertinent, there still seems to be a need amongst the human race to destroy Mumma Nature’s little wild patches of beauty, especially in urban areas. I live in a seaside town above a wildlife corridor, rich in Flora & Fauna - yet people are forever brutally hacking back the bird, butterfly & insect attracting plant-life to ‘tidy’ the built environment.

I prefer a mix of un-groomed nature & manmade in the built environment - I love Ivy for it’s unnoticed beauty, also for its persistence & refusal to be annihilated!

So a more unusual festive card....
