Description

'Iron Slag: Connecting you to the land and history from where it came, the shards featured in these earrings were discovered in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. Slag is the glass-like by-product left over after a desired metal, such as iron, has been separated (i.e., smelted) from its raw ore. Slag is usually a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide. However, slags can contain metal sulphides and elemental metals. Certainly, whilst this shard was being cut, it smelt of sulphur! During the Victorian era, several companies in Britain, France, and other European countries manufactured slag glass into vases and also included the glass in tiffany lamps. Whilst it cannot be certain if this shard of slag came from the construction of the actual Ironbridge, the blue/green/grey colours of the slag indicates it an iron-based slag. Once polished up, the swirls and colours resemble a mussel shell, evoking thoughts of the ocean at the end of the River Severn, next to which this shard was found.

Backing: Your historic shards are set into hammered recycled silver, called eco silver, making a statement of both style and sustainability. Sterling Silver earring wires ensure you shouldn't have to worry about any metal allergies or green earlobes.

These earrings have been stamped .925 and signed as 'UBL' - Unearthed by Lynn.
