This twist is a high quality traditional bookbinding thread made specifically for hand bookbinding. But of course it is also suitable for other tasks you might use a linen thread for, like leather working and knotting.
The numbers refer to the traditional (and non-standardized) numbering system unique to the French manufacturer. But if you have bought bookbinding thread before, you will probably find that the same number thickness will give a comparable thread thickness.
The higher the number, the thinner the thread. No.s 10 and 12 are fairly thick threads, and would be suitable for binding a book with voluminous paper, or with a binding style that asks for a considerable swell in the spine. A thicker thread is also welcome if your binding will be exposed, and you want to emphasis the sewing.
No. 15 is what I personally use for exposed bindings and No. 20 for thinner papers or covered spines most of the time. These are fairly thick threads for the task. No. 20/25 are the most common thicknesses most bookbinders use for standard tasks. - But of course that really depends!
No. 30 and 40 are already pretty thin, and would be suitable for bindings with many signatures and/or with dense paper.
This thread should be waxed by hand before binding books.
