Love-in-a-mist (nigella) is not only a beautiful name, but the flowers are a stunning range of deep blues with the odd pink thrown in for amazing contrast!
This brooch has a gorgeous turquoise beaded centre with glass beads of many types, pebbles, small seed beads, gold plated, firepolished and little Swarovski bicones to add a little sparkle. The fabric petals are individually cut and folded in a lovely quilting cotton - the geometric shape reminiscent of the long thin petals of the nigella flower.
The beads are woven using 6lb fireline beading/fishing line and the centre is sewn on to the fabric petals. The brooch is finished on the back with felt and a stainless steel brooch pin.

I was surprised to see some love-in-a-mist growing a sunny spot in the garden - a welcome escapee from the neighbours. I love the blue of the flowers and am always pleasantly surprised to see a pink one or one of the slightly less expected blue shades. In the dappled light, through the sea of fine green foliage, a few of the flowers had a turquoise hue.
What a lovely colour for a flower brooch....! The long thin petals of the flower suited the long thin petal shape I had been practising folding and the brooch was born.
