Are you sitting comfortably?
These Seiza are made from pieces of residential Oak flooring offcuts. I am constantly amazed at the beauty of the figure (that’s the grain, sworls and knots in the wood). I have handcut dovetails in each end and the legs slot in with a bash of your palm. If you ever wish to take them apart a thump from behind each leg removes them should you want to carry them in a bag to your Zendo.

I have left the original, hardwearing finish uppermost but have sanded the rough undersides to prevent the wood from catching on clothing.
This I have then finished with linseed oil.

The stool is 15” wide x 5.5” deep x 7.25” tall. (39x14x18.5 cm). In the picture I show my son Rhys who is 5’4”tall. I am 6’ tall and sit comfortably on it I used to race bicycles and could be considered as having sturdy calves and posterior

I have been practising Zen buddhism for the past 20 years. Zazen meditation is a fundamental of this. I found that I have very poor flexibility and despite using zafu (cushions) only ever managed an uncomfortable half lotus at best. I eventually discovered Seiza which are small stools which are placed over the calves when kneeling and sit upon.
Many have a fixed angle but I have found that the rounded feet allows your spine to find a comfortable, upright posture.

I now have severe arthritis in both hips but still find using one of these benches far more comfortable than a zafu or indeed a chair as my hips and waist are in a more upright position
