Hand embroidered silk hoop art depicting a Zebra Spider and moss. She is mounted in a 5" wooden hoop and has been stitched using floss silk thread on a silk/cotton blend fabric. I have used a thread painting technique to stitch the spider and the moss patches are tiny French knots in five different shades of green.
Salticus scenicus, or more commonly known as the Zebra Spider are found throughout the UK from March to October. These beautiful arachnids are jumping spiders, they do not create webs but rather catch their prey by leaping on it. They have four large eyes to spot their prey and can leap a distance of up to 100mm.
I have always been afraid of spiders but when you study them up close they can be very beautiful. Stitching them forces you to study their patterns and focus on their amazing detail, I somehow detach myself from my initial fear. Zebra spiders are in fact very cute when studied up close, their large eyes almost give them a cartoon quality.
