was35 now15 Clay pipe and blue lace agate necklace.
All the white beads are in fact clay pipes stems. Back in the day (from the 16th century onwards to be less vague) clay pipes were popular and although they werent designed to be disposable, traditionally they were quite fragile so therefore didn't have a long shelf life. Dependant on how affluent you were some people just smoked it and then simply chucked it away. Its unusual to find one intact so these are all the stems of the pipe when they have come away from the bowl. The stems themselves that are left are quite robust so they make perfect found beads! At the beginning of the 20th century smoking cigarettes became more popular. Also the introduction of wooden pipes made clay fall out of fashion. These were all found not on the beach but on the River Thames in London. They have all been washed and cleaned before being paired with these beautiful hued gemstones. This is a longer style necklace that is designed to be slipped over the head.
