The Tees Valley has a long history of shipbuilding and sea-faring and when the Maritime Museum at Hartlepool's Historic Quay first opened I had enamels on sale there. This was the beginning of my interest in painting nautical subjects on enamels.

Full description
This pair of earrings features my painting of a tall ship at sea. After building up several layers of white enamel on the copper oval, to provide a base on which to paint, I have painted the pictures, using tablets of finely ground enamel, soluble in water, to produce a glaze over the white. When the picture was finished I fired it as I would any other enamel piece but taking particular care not to overfire and so burn out the thin layer of glaze that makes the picture, The work I do in this way I sign with my initials, FH. This signature may be seen at the bottom of the two pictures that make up the earrings.
The ovals measure 18mm by 13mm. They are mounted on silver fish-hook wires.
