Around a hundred years ago, a collection of tiny seashells was tucked inside a little red pillbox, with a note saying “Red Sea"..... generations later, this box found a home with me. Noticing how precious it felt, I began wondering what other found treasures might be nestling in other old boxes, waiting to be rediscovered…
And so, my “Found and Treasured” mixed media sculptures began, inspired by first that little red box and later by seeing similar old boxes and tins in museums which, long ago, had held precious finds.
My Found and Treasured story boxes combine exquisite hand modelled porcelain ‘finds’ with found objects and ephemera, nestled in antique, vintage & retro containers. Each one tells its own imagined story of a place and time when something beautiful was found and treasured. At the heart of each one is my love of the natural world... and my delight in finding and making small treasures.

Full description
“Where the River Bends” is a mixed media sculpture that includes a miniature handmade porcelain 'lichen', tiny natural objects and a fragment of an old map, all nestled in a little metal box. It tells an imagined story of a visit to a very special place... where lichen-encrusted trees grow beside a bend in a river.
The box is a light golden colour. It has some small scratches and signs of wear. The stone on the front is the colour of woodland greens and browns. I don't know what type of stone it is - it is not totally smooth, though pleasing to the touch. When closed, the box is approximately 3.5cm wide, 4.2cm tall and 1.6cm deep. It happily stands upright, whether open or closed, and it's possible to angle the lid so that the contents are reflected in the shiny metal surface. See the 10p for scale.
I made the white porcelain lichen especially to fit this little box. I shaped the soft clay using just a few simple hand tools, then fired it in my kiln to 1245 degrees. The map is a fragment of an O.S. map of Scotland dated 1946.
This unique sculpture would be a beautiful gift for a nature lover, story teller, or someone who that delights in miniature handmade treasures.
It will be posted in a box for protection on its journey, with lots of padding.
Please note I’ve done my very best to photograph the colours accurately, but colours can look different on different devices.
