This little porcelain pendant was made entirely by hand using simple tools. It is inspired by the intricate beauty of wild mushrooms.
The pendant is a slightly cupped shape, with lines radiating from the centre that were drawn in to the clay while it was still wet. At the centre is a tiny dot of porcelain - a focal point to the piece.
The pendant itself is approximately 26mm in diameter (about the same size as a 10p piece). It about 8mm thick, including the bail. As the pendant was created by hand, without the use of moulds, it is not perfectly round and the thickness / height of the edges varies; I wanted the piece to have a very natural, organic look.
The pendant has a metal bail attached, and is strung on light green cotton cord. There are two sliding knots that allow the length of the cord to be adjusted, to a maximum of about 60cm (24").
The porcelain is matt, uncoloured and unglazed. The back of the pendant is untextured.
You will be getting the necklace pictured here.... a beautiful gift for a nature lover, or for yourself to keep. It will be sent in a little gift box, carefully wrapped.
Please note I have tried hard to match the colour of the photographs to the necklace, but colours may look different on other screens.

The idea for this pendant started when I was artist-in-residence with the John Clare Trust. John Clare was a poet who grew up in Helpston, a village in Cambridgeshire, in Victorian times. He wrote about his local countryside, and had an eye for the small details in nature.
Reading Clare's poetry inspired me to get to know some of the places that he wrote about. I became fascinated by the plants, lichen and fungi that now grow in those places; particularly their textures, structures and forms. I focus on these small details of nature that delight me, and which I hope others will enjoy too...
