Full description

This brooch is 30mm square. It is mounted on a 26mm brooch bar that fastens with a rotating catch. The bar is soldered to the copper base.

To make it I first built up several layers of clear enamel. I then fired a layer of turquoise enamel over these. The copper base shows through the turquoise in tones of golden-brown. Next I added rods of dark red and dark green enamel. When the piece was red hot in the kiln I drew through the surface with a steel point to create the scrolled pattern. This process has also added a tactile element to the brooch in that the enamel has set smooth but uneven, adding too to the effects of the play of light on the brooch.

Designed by Francis Hayes in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire
