An embroidered bag stitched from a section from a vintage table runner, combined with new and similar embroidery in matching threads, resulting in a very special design.
An embroidered section of a vintage table runner was chosen for the flap of this bag. The embroidery was sympathetically repaired and a few extra daisies and leaves were added - to give a 'fuller' design. The front of the bag was cut from a plain, and un-damaged portion of the runner and embellished with hand-embroidery to match the flap. The back panel, gusset and all interior panels of the bag have been cut from a printed cotton fabric in shades of gold, cream, burgundy and dark green.
All panels of the bag, and all corresponding lining pieces, have been backed by fusible interfacing. Each panel was then blanket-stitched to its corresponding backing/lining, using burgundy crochet cotton. The bag was assembled by over-sewing the seams through the blanket stitching - using the same burgundy thread. A button hole stitch loop over a hand-embroidered vintage linen button closes the bag. The strap is a length of hand-made cord which has been produced in un-bleached cotton ( using a lucet).
Height: 14 cm approx
Maximum width: 18.5 cm approx
Maximum depth (width of gusset): 4 cm approx
Width of opening 12 cm approx.
Length of cord (lightly stretched by the contents listed above): 116 cm approx - just long enough for me to wear 'across body'
A table runner in need of a new purpose was the starting point for this pretty bag.
