A few years ago I decided to try a new experience and emigrated to Australia. After 2.5 years in the land of sunshine the desire to return to Scotland was too strong. I came back in 2014 with a renewed appreciation of my native home.
After painting a soft, sedate rose as a gift for an English relative I felt driven to create an artwork that expressed the vibrancy of Scotland. It seemed natural to start with a thistle.
The prickly thistle has been Scotland’s national emblem for centuries with its motto being “Nemo me impune lacessit”, “None Touch Me with Impunity”. This humble weed is brave, bold and beautiful. It’s a symbol of protection, a tough plant that survives and thrives in harsh conditions.
I aim to bring to life the human traits and emotions associated with the word through the shapes and gestures of the thistles. Each artwork is designed to be quirky, cheeky and positive. I hope they make you smile and brighten your walls with a delightful reminder of Scotland.

Full description
‘Aye’ is print number 1 in a quirky collection by the artist Cat Lawson. The Thistle Kingdom Collection brings Scottish words to life in the form of unique and characterful thistles. This charming print is a reproduction taken from an original hand crafted painting produced using a cross-hatch ink drawing technique and watercolour.
“Aye” is a Scottish or North Eastern English way of saying “yes”. If you’re in love and propose to someone you might lucky enough to hear the response, “Aye, ah will marry you!” To confuse matters it can also be used in sarcastic response to a question or to challenge a presumption, “Aye, right!” meaning “definitely not!”
A fantastic gift for all lovers of Scotland ‘Aye’ could be given to a couple getting married. Or it could make a great gift idea for the 45% that voted for Scottish independence. My artwork is a reflection of my love for Scotland and the people that choose to live there. After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art with a BA (Hons) Fine Art and have recently been inspired to develop artworks that express the fun, positive and light-hearted side of Scotland.
This 12x8" print is professionally printed on high quality 300gsm Italian paper with a felt mark finish and off white shade the prints are packed in a cellophane with card backboard and hard-backed envelope for safe delivery. The print has a 3mm inner border for framing.
