I live by the sea in Brighton and love seagulls - especially how the birds seem to recover their coolness after moments of seeming quite goofy (walking really fast to escape perils as if they've forgotten their wings, falling in bins etc.) I wanted to paint a quintessential seaside seagull and it felt fitting to make him a mod. Nothing would ruffle this chap's feathers.
