I have been experimenting with many ways of re-purposing vintage linens in my collection. I have made more traditional quilts. Many vintage textiles feature hand crochet sometimes as inserts attached by more or less the method which I have used, and often as lovely deep edgings to tablecloths and bed linens. I wanted to try and combine linens with crochet and the fleece backing to the squares proved the answer to achieving a warm and soft blanket feel.

A beautiful and cosy blanket or throw, crafted from carefully chosen vintage linens, in classic blue and white colours, combined with crochet.
Squares featuring embroidered and appliqued motifs were cut from the vintage linens sometimes mounted on a white vintage linen square to frame the design. Each fabric square was blanket stitched to a backing of new fleece fabric using crochet cotton. The fleece provides a 'blanket weight' and cosy feel (Image 5). By working into the blanket stitches, each square was given a border of crochet using blue, white, and green acrylic yarns. Other squares were entirely crocheted in the same yarns with a central flower motif, four of these have a central raised, Irish crochet, flower motif. The blanket has been finished with a simple lace crochet edging.
Note - the linens are vintage. When selecting motifs, it is sometimes not possible to entirely exclude edgings and adjacent patterns due to the irregularity of pattern placement on the vintage item. These 'blemishes' do not detract significantly from the design (e.g.Image 4).

I have pre-washed this item on a cool wool cycle and then dried (as flat as possible) in a warm place - this worked well and I would recommend the same approach. Pressing should not be necessary, but if you should wish to press, do so over a damp cloth ON THE RIGHT SIDE using a low heat (the fleece backing may not be ironed!)
