The scrolling technique, drawing out a pattern while the piece is at red hot, perfectly exploits the characteristics of the medium, basically glass. The colours retain their vibrance, the shape of the pattern remains distinct, because of the cooling of the enamel as it is worked there is a textural element to the piece, the pattern and the effects are not repeatable is not and so every piece is unique.

This is a copper dish to which I have added several layers of enamel, each one fired to fuse to the copper at a temperature of 800 celsius. That includes a layer on the reverse to balance the tension of expansion and contraction of the work as more layers are added. Once I had a smooth finished white dish I added a layer of blue. Then I scattered white enamel in the centre and ringed that with a scattering of pink and gold enamel powder. I fired the piece once more. When it was a red hot (800 degrees) and still in the kiln I drew a pointed steel tool through the surface to draw out the white, pink and gold into a pattern.
The work was cooling while I did this. I needed to be finished before the enamel set solid. Because of the disturbance to its surface while it is cooling the enamel may not set flat and consequently the final surface is uneven although the enamel sets smooth. This enhances the play of light on the piece.
The dish is approximately 92 mm in diameter; 20mm deep. The photos suggest that the dish is not a perfect circle; it was when I started but the camera does not lie.
What you use the dish for is your own affair; the photograph showing it as somewhere to put your earrings overnight is illustrative only; earrings are not supplied.
