It's cheaper to have an artist paint one picture then print as many copies as you like than to have him paint the same picture dozens of times; plus you get a consistent output. The only upside for the artist is that he/she doesn't get bored. So in the eighteenth century both the enamel and the china producers got into transfer printing techniques. Clearly the china industry had some kind of edge; otherwise instead of taking you cuppa from a china service you'd use an enamel mug today.

For me as a crafts-person the technique is an interesting sidelight on the history of enamelling and, at my scale of production, a stimulating technical challenge.

Full description

A white enamel pendant,18mm by 12mm, to which I have fired a transfer picture of two bassets' heads. The picture is printed in ink that uses enamel pigments.

The pendant is mounted on a silver-plate, 45cm (18 inch), curb chain fastening with a simple bolt ring.
